Abstract:
This paper aims at clarifying the role of manas as the contributory factor (adhipati-pratyaya) and the similar-immediate factor (samanantara-pratyaya) in conscious sensory cognitions, with a special perspective of the afflicted mentation, kliṣṭaṁ manas, in the Yogācāra thought. In the scheme of eighteen cognitive elements (aṣṭādaśa-dhātu), cognitions arise only when a cognition comes into contact with its corresponding object and faculty. The mental faculty, manas, under the Abhidharmic scholasticism is designated as the cognition that has just ceased in the previous moment. This, however, ascribes both the role as the contributory factor and as the similar-immediate factor to manas. Moreover, unlike sensory faculties, manas is not considered a distinct entity (dharma) on its own and therefore unreal. The Yogācāra Buddhist, although following the Abhidharmic designation of manas, introduces the afflicted mentation as a cognition proper to substantiate the effectivity of the mental faculty.
